A friend of mine recently asked me what I considered to be the best quality a teacher could possess. My initial thought was that a great teacher must love what they do. However, after thinking about it, that really isn't a quality the teacher necessarily possesses. It is an unfortunate fact that there are teachers who do not necessarily love what they do, but there are qualities a teacher must possess to be an effective educator, no matter how much they love what they do.
There are so many qualities that go into making a great teacher, but in my opinion the greatest quality is organization. There is so much to keep track of that if you are not an organized person you will be overwhelmed and your teaching can only suffer. When I have had to hire a new teacher, I always ask all the candidates if they consider themselves to be someone who is organized. If their answer is anything but yes, then I probably did not hire that person.
The barrage of everything can absolutely be overwhelming especially for a new teacher. Being organized and having a plan of attack will always be advantageous and give you the best opportunity to be a successful teacher. If a teacher is an organized person, they always have a beginning and ending point for their days and all the dominoes are more likely to fall in place in between. Being organized doesn't leave things to chance and your classroom will just run smoother.
What are some great organization techniques that you use? What do you consider to be the best teaching quality?
