Education 101

By , About.com Guide

There are many facets to education. A good education is invaluable and those who want to be educated will be rewarded. Those who choose to have a career in education often do so because they love young people and want to make a difference. Education consists of administrators, teachers, support personnel, students, parents, buildings, policies, tests, instruction, and so much more. Each ingredient is dependent upon another. Education is constantly changing. It is important that each of us try to understand what education is all about and the importance of a good education.

The People

The saying goes that it takes an army to educate a single student and that statement isn't too far off. Think about the number of people directly associated with the school that will work with a student in some capacity by the time they graduate. Each of us play our own unique role in education including the student themselves.

Instruction & Assessment

The backbone of any education system is the quality of instruction and assessment that it provides. There isn't one best practice or method when it comes to either. Teachers can effectively teach through a variety of media. Every situation is different and a good teacher will adapt to the students they currently have. Assessment is equally important. Great teachers are able to assess students authentically, dissect the data, and use it to drive their instruction.

Discipline & Classroom Management

Unfortunately a key component of education is discipline and classroom management. Students of all ages will challenge a teacher's authority. How the teacher responds to these challenges impacts the overall effectiveness they have in the classroom. Schools as a whole must develop and enforce policies which discourage poor behavior and deal with such behavior in a quick and fair manner.
