Traditional School Calendar

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Most schools follow a traditional school calendar. A traditional school calendar typically spans the course of nine months. The school year typically begins anywhere from the middle of August to the first of September and continues to the middle of May to the first of June. Students and teachers get the remainder of the summer off. Many states require their schools to be in session from 175-180 days. There has been a recent shift by many states to allow some flexibility to scheduling by counting the hours in session instead of the days in session. 1080 hours is the typical number of hours required.
