Definition: Many schools have chosen to shift to year round education. Proponents say that a year round education allows for a more continuous period of instruction and that students retain more during breaks as opposed to those students on a traditional school calendar. In year round education, the calendar is revised to give a shorter summer break, but with more frequent breaks during periods of instruction. These breaks are often called intercessions. Intercessions provide students who struggle time for remediation and enrichment. There are many versions of year round education. One version shortens the summer break to 30 days, but also gives three 15 day breaks to correlate with fall, winter, and spring breaks.
